How Big is Baby McLees? Our little one weighs about a pound, and is comparable in size to the following: a spaghetti squash, a coconut, an American guinea pig, and a porcupine (at birth). Little Michael’s senses are developing, and he may be grabbing onto his umbilical cord. His sense of taste is allowing him to experience whatever it is I’m tasting.
Movement: I love being able to feel little Michael move! And move he does. The movement isn’t following any really predictable patterns yet, so I never know when I will feel a little jab or a series of pokes. He does, however, seem to always start moving a few minutes into my morning coffee.
Pregnancy Symptoms: My left hand started tingling and falling asleep less than 10 minutes into my road trip to Texas. Fortunately, I saw my doctor right before the trip and was able to discuss my carpal tunnel experience with her. She said it’s very normal to get this during pregnancy and recommended that I try a wrist splint. Boy am I glad that I did! I can’t imagine driving for 2 days with a hand that constantly falls asleep. As soon as my hand started tingling, I would put on the wrist splint, and the falling asleep sensation would immediately stop. Every time I stopped to use the restroom and stretch my legs, I took the brace off. Then, when I started driving again, my hand would start falling asleep a few miles in, and I would put the splint back on. It was such a relief to be able to make the tingling feeling go away so easily. Other than the carpal tunnel, I am happy to say I have no other bothersome symptoms to report. I completed the 1,214 mile drive from Ohio to Texas without any challenges. I was worried that I would get too tired or that my legs would swell up, but I stopped just about every 2 hours, and I think this helped considerably.
Maternity Clothes: I’m really enjoying wearing long, knit maternity tank tops in the summer heat. The long length provides ample and comfortable belly coverage.
Here I am in a comfy navy tank with the awesome travel system we picked out from my mom.
Nighttime: Again, my left hand! On some nights, it falls asleep and hurts enough to wake me up. The wrist splint is always standing at the ready on my bedside table. As soon as I put it on, the feeling begins to return to my hand, and I can go back to sleep.
Food I’m Avoiding: I’m still feeling an aversion to pork and chicken.
Food I’m Enjoying: I’ve been munching on fresh fruit, milk, eggs, apricots, almonds, Pirates Booty (a yummy snack for in the car), granola bars, and of course ice cream. I’ve also been enjoying delicious and healthy home-cooked meals made by my mother. It’s wonderful to be back home where my mom is cooking up recipes I’ve been craving for months!
Best Moment this Week: Crossing the state line into Texas at Texarkana. After not seeing my family for 8 months, it felt really good to be back in the great state of Texas. Seeing my parents, sisters, nieces, and nephews for the first time since November was a very happy experience. Everyone is so excited about little Michael! It is beautiful to see how much love he his already receiving. When I went up to my room at my parents’ house, I found 2 spectacular flowers. My dad picked out a blue one for little Michael and a pink one for me.
My mom has done so many sweet and loving things to celebrate the new baby. She went through some of my baby things and found the little shirts I wore in the hospital when I was born. She worked some miracles cleaning them and was able to freshen them up. I found them neatly folded in a coastal keepsake box along with some other outfits, onesies, booties, and freshly polished silver from when I was a baby. It amazed me that she saved all of this and was able to make it fresh and clean again for the arrival of little Michael. I can already imagine him wearing the adorable little booties and being all bundled up for the Ohio winter.
Michael: Michael did so many thoughtful things to make sure I was prepared for my road trip to Texas. He put some audio books on my iTunes, and listening to a book helped the time and miles go by. He also put new tires on the car and had it serviced. He put forth a lot of effort to ensure everything was in proper working order before the trip, and it made me (and little Michael) feel very well-taken care!
Michael took this picture of me right before I left Ohio for Texas. I wanted to take a pre-trip photo and then a post-trip photo when I return to see how much the bump has grown.
What I’m Looking Forward To: I’m so happy to be back in Texas spending time with my family. Everyone’s excitement over the pregnancy and little Michael means a great deal to me. I’m looking forward to sharing the pregnancy and anticipation of our little one’s arrival with my family.
