How Big is Baby McLees? At 17 weeks, our little one is comparable in size to the following: a pear, an artichoke, an onion, a chipmunk, a pygmy marmoset, and a baby yellow-bellied marmot, (also called a rock chuck). He or she is about 5 inches long and weighs approximately 5 ounces. Baby’s sense of hearing is developing, and fat tissue is beginning to form to regulate body temperature and metabolism.
Movement: I’m hoping it will be any day now!
Milestone: When I lay on my back, I can definitely feel the baby bump! I just started noticing it this week. Before, if I put my hand on my belly, it just felt like a post-buffet stomach.
Pregnancy Symptoms: The ligament pain seems to be easing up a bit. I’ve been getting a lot of things accomplished around the house, and I’m finally feeling like I have more energy. But the things that used to be simple tasks are leaving me feeling wiped out afterwards. For example, I vacuumed two rooms and did some light dusting and cleaning. The next day, my legs felt very sore from stooping to vacuum. I think it’s because I haven’t been going on walks as frequently as before. I’ve been keeping up with my biking, but not walking, and I think the walking is really good for me. Yesterday, I went on a long walk with Michael and Kaiser to work the soreness out and feel much better today. I did have to tell Michael to slow down a few times during the walk, which is definitely new to me. I am used to sprint-walking! The walk felt great though, so I’m going to make an effort to get a long walk in on as many days as possible. I’m happy to report that so far, I’ve only experienced minor symptoms and usually feel very well!
Maternity Clothes: I really thought I could just buy a larger sized pair of workout shorts when my regular pairs starting getting too tight, and therefore too short. I figured I could just pull the waist band over my belly or fold it under my belly and be ready to go. Wrong! I was shocked when I put on a pair of gym shorts, size large, before our walk the other day. Suffice it to say, I am now looking for a good pair of maternity workout shorts.
Nighttime: I’ve only been sleeping on my side this week, and despite the fact that this position keeps making my arms and hands fall asleep, I’ve generally been sleeping pretty well. I am also enjoying making it through the night without having to get up to go to the restroom. It’s amazing! Just as predicted in What to Expect, I am getting a temporary reprieve from constantly having to go to the restroom.
Food I’m Avoiding: This weekend, I picked all of the chicken out of a casserole I made, so still no chicken unless it’s super spicy or in nugget form with buffalo sauce! And still no pork for me.
Food I’m Enjoying: I’ve always liked carbonated water. Now that it’s getting warmer, I love to sip on a glass seltzer water with ice and a bit of lime juice. Very refreshing! On Monday, I cut up a watermelon, honey dew melon, and cantaloupe. All of them were fresh and at the perfect level of ripeness. I’ve been enjoying bowls of these chilled fruits with lunch and dinner.
Michael: Michael has been working very hard at the warehouse, but he makes time to ask how I’m feeling and check on the baby. Despite working long hours, he still helps out around the house and with our puppies.
What I’m Looking Forward To: We’re halfway through the month of June, and at the end of the month, we will know if our little one is a pink flamingo or a blue whale! My sister and her family’s visit is getting closer, and I just can’t wait to see all of them.
